Scholarships and Awards
The following awards and scholarships are offered annually by the Human
Sciences Department. If you meet the criteria and would like to
apply for any of these, download and print the application and return it
by January 31, at 4:00 p.m. to the Human Sciences Executive Aide.
Interviews of applicants may be requested at the discretion of the
Scholarship Committee. OFFICIAL Transcripts must be submitted with
application. All scholarship recipients will be REQUIRED to attend
the awards banquet.NOTE: The
dates on all the applications reflect 2005. Please change the date
manually if you print out the application online or the EHS front office

ALBERT L. AND ETHEL CARVER SMITH MEMORIAL
SCHOLARSHIP
These scholarships provide approximately $1,500 to four Human Sciences
majors. Four scholarships will be awarded. Selection criteria:
A major in one of the
Human Sciences areas.
Classification of
sophomore or junior in the spring semester (at least 30 semester hours
earned or having two remaining semesters).
Scholarship (minimum
3.0 GPA).
Financial need.
Must be a full-time
student during semesters for which scholarship is funded. One-half of
the scholarship shall be awarded for each of the semesters.
Recipient is required
to attend awards banquet.

RITA DAVENPORT HUMAN SCIENCES SCHOLARSHIP
This scholarship provides approximately $200 to a Human
Sciences major. Selection criteria:
A major in one of the
Human Sciences areas.
Classification of
sophomore or junior in the spring semester (at least 30 semester hours
earned or having two remaining semesters).
Scholarship (minimum
2.8 GPA).
Demonstrated
leadership in the areas of Human Sciences, campus life, and community
involvement.
Established meaningful
professional goals.
Financial need.
Must be a full-time
student during semesters for which scholarship is funded. One-half of
the scholarship shall be awarded for each of the semesters.

CLEO CARPENTER AWARD
This award is made annually to a senior student selected as
the most outstanding Nutrition and Food Science major. The award varies
yearly, but is approximately $200. Selection criteria:
A major in Nutrition
and Food Science.
Classification of
senior (at least 90 semester hours earned).
Scholarship (minimum
3.0 GPA).
Community and campus
activities.
Career goals and plans
for practicing in the area of nutrition and food science.
Must be a full-time
student during semester that scholarship is awarded.

KAPPA OMICRON NU SCHOLARSHIP AWARD
This scholarship for approximately $200 is made annually to a
participating, contributing member of KONu. Selection criteria:
A KONu member.
Classification of
junior in the spring semester (60-89 hours earned or two remaining
semesters).
Planning to return to
MTSU to study Human Sciences as a full-time student the following
fall semester.
Explanation of need
for the scholarship.
Must be a full-time
student during semesters for which scholarship is funded.

BOUTWELL SCHOLARSHIP
The award of approximately $200 is made annually. Selection
criteria:
A major in Early
Childhood Education or Interdisciplinary Studies (K-4 emphasis).
Classification of

Campus and/or
community participation.
Established meaningful
professional goals.
Personal interview
required upon request.
Must be a full-time
student during semesters for which scholarship is funded.

TENNESSEE ASSOCIATION FOR FAMILY & COMMUNITY
EDUCATION, DAVIDSON COUNTY
The Tennessee Association for Family & Consumer Education,
Davidson County, provides a $1000 educational scholarships. Following is
the criteria for this scholarship. Payment of the award shall be made in
the amount of $500 per semester. The scholarship will be rewarded each
year as long as the recipient maintains a 3.0 gpa.
Major field of study is Family & Consumer Sciences
Graduate of a Davidson County high school
College sophomore, junior, senior or graduate student
Has a 3.0 grade average. Failure to maintain 3.0 grade point average
will determinate scholarship
HARRIET MAPLES ESTES MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP
The Harriet Maples Estes Memorial Scholarship Fund has been
established to provide annual scholarships of $1000-1500 to Textiles,
Merchandising & Design majors. Emphasis will be placed on financial
need. One half of the award shall be awarded for Fall and Spring:
Must be a major in the Textiles, Merchandising & Design program
Currently enrolled at Middle Tennessee State University
Evidence of financial need
Have an overall 2.5 grade point average
Must be a full-time student during the semesters for which the
scholarship is awarded
Must have completed 12 hours of TXMD coursework
Classification of a junior or senior during semester for which the
scholarship is funded.
MARGARET PUTNAM SCHOLARSHIP
This award provides approximately $300 to a Family & Consumer
Sciences Education major. Selection criteria:
A major in Family &
Consumer Sciences Education.
Scholarship (minimum
2.5 GPA).
Admission to Teacher
Education by the end of semester in which application is submitted.
Financial need.
Completion of at least
16 hours at MTSU with a minimum of 7 hours completed in Human
Sciences courses prior to application.
Demonstrated
pre-professional involvement.
Must be a full-time
student during semesters for which scholarship is funded. One-half of
the scholarship shall be awarded for each of the semesters.

RUTH AND WILL BOWDOIN SCHOLARSHIP
This scholarship tentatively provides a $1,000 scholarship to
an Early Childhood or Interdisciplinary Studies (K-4) major. Preference
will be given to students of African American origin and residents of
Tennessee or Alabama who attended Ruth Bowdoin classroom on wheels.
Selection criteria:
A major in Early
Childhood Education or Interdisciplinary Studies (K-4 emphasis) as a
full-
time student.
Scholarship (minimum
2.5 GPA and/or meet any changes in admission to teacher
education.
Financial need. Must
submit adequate financial verification as requested by the review
committee.
Demonstrate a strong
commitment to education for the parent as well as for the child.
Reflect personal and
professional competencies which are believed to lead to quality
teaching.
Interview may be
requested.
Must be full-time
student during semester for which scholarship is funded.

ERNESTINE N. REEDER HONOR SCHOLARSHIP
This scholarship is an annual scholarship for an
undergraduate student seeking a degree in the Human Sciences Department.
The amount is determined by the endowment’s accumulated interest each
year. Selection criteria:
A major in one of the
programs offered by the Human Sciences Department.
Completion of 18 hours
in the Human Sciences Department.
Scholarship (minimum
3.0 GPA).
Be an active member of
at least one of the student organizations in the Human Sciences
Department.
Established meaningful
professional goals.
Must be full-time
student during semesters for which scholarship is funded. One-half of
the scholarship shall be awarded for each of the semesters.

RODDY MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP
The Roddy Memorial Fund has been established to provide a
$3,000 annual scholarship for six Rutherford County Human Sciences
majors. The recipient must be a graduate of a Rutherford County public
or private high school, with preference given to residents of Lascassas
or Rockvale. The recipient will be selected annual by a Human Sciences
Scholarship Committee and announced at the annual Awards Banquet.
Payment of the award shall be made in the amount of $1,500 for each of
the fall and spring semesters. Selection criteria:
A major in one of the
Human Sciences areas.
Classification of
freshman, sophomore, junior, or senior in the spring semester and having
at least one remaining semester.
Scholarship (minimum
3.0 GPA).
Financial need.
Must be a full-time
student during semesters for which scholarship is funded. One-half of
the scholarship shall be awarded for each of the semesters.
Submit official
university transcript that indicates current GPA.

CHRISTINE AND A.F. RODDY MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP
The Roddy Memorial Fund has been established to provide an
annual scholarship for a Rutherford County Human Sciences major. The
recipient must plan to graduate from a Rutherford County public or
private high school with preference given to residents of Lascassas or
Rockvale. The scholarship amount varies from $1000-$5000 per year, with
half given in the Fall semester, and half in the Spring semester.
Selection criteria:
Declare a major in one
of the Human Sciences areas:
Be a graduate of, or
scheduled to graduate from, a Rutherford County private or public
high school.
Minimum high school
GPA of 2.8 or ACT 20.
Financial need.
Completed application
returned to Human Sciences Executive Aide by 4:00 pm on
January 31.
Must be a full-time
student during semester for which scholarship is funded. One-half of
the scholarship shall be awarded for each of the semesters.
Submit official high
school transcript that indicates GPA and ACT score.

LUCY DYE SCHOLARSHIP
The Lucy Dye Scholarship has been established by the
Nashville Area Association of Family and Consumer Sciences. The
recipient will be selected annually by the Human Sciences Scholarship
Committee and announced at the Award Banquet. Payment of the award shall
be made in the amount of approximately $150 for each of the semesters.
Selection Criteria:
If a student is or has
been a Lucy Dye scholarship recipient, he/she may have the
opportunity to reapply for the scholarship a second time; however,
he/she will compete
with the other applicants.
Be currently enrolled
at Middle Tennessee State University.
Be a declared major in
one of the Human Sciences programs.
Have an overall 3.0
grade point average or higher while carrying a full student load.
Indicate plans to
graduate with a major in a Human Sciences program and have evidence
of pursuing a career in an area of Human Sciences.
Demonstrated loyalty
and dedication the Human Sciences profession.
Submit official
university transcript that indicates current GPA.
Completed application
returned to Human Sciences Executive Aide by January 31, 2005.
